Amiable, courageous, outspoken, helpful and determined—these are just a few words that define Leonoria’s character. To know her is to love her. And if, for any reason, someone did not, it would only be because they were intimidated by her relentless drive to achieve every goal she set her mind to.

My connection with Leonoria is both personal and professional. I have known her since she was just five years old. Even as a little girl in Infant 1, her infectious joy and vibrant personality captured my sister’s heart, making her a cherished presence in our home. She was my nephew’s best childhood friend, spending 12 consecutive years by his side as classmates in both primary and high school. Their friendship remained strong into adulthood, lasting even after he migrated to the U.S. To our family, Leonoria was more than just a friend—she was like a daughter to my sister, always welcomed with open arms.

Beyond our personal bond, Leonoria and I shared a powerful connection through a cause close to our hearts: autism advocacy. As fellow autism moms, we united in our commitment to making a difference, becoming active members of Autism Belize, a growing organization dedicated to supporting parents, teachers, and caregivers of children with special needs.

In 2020, when Autism Belize held its first parent meeting, Ms. Christy sought volunteers to form a board and officially launch the organization. Only five parents attended that meeting—one of them was Leonoria Novelo. Without hesitation, she stepped up, wholeheartedly volunteering as the organization’s first vice-chairperson, eager to drive change and bring awareness, support, and resources to Belize’s most vulnerable—children with special needs.

As vice-chair, Leonoria poured her heart and soul into Autism Belize’s mission. She tirelessly worked to promote the cause, actively engaging with the community, securing prize donations for the annual Autism Belize Walk, and attending every parent training, meeting, and event. She wasn’t just willing to help—she was willing to learn, always seeking ways to expand her knowledge and make a greater impact. And she never did it alone. She brought her entire family into the movement, with Ms. Sofia standing right by her side, working the tables at DigiPark for the annual walks and showing up in full support.

Leonoria Novelo was not just a supporter of Autism Belize—she was an instrumental foundation of its very existence. It was her willingness, courage, and unwavering dedication to stepping up as a board member that helped lay the groundwork for the organization’s success. Without people like Leonoria—those who lead with both heart and action—Autism Belize would not have had the strong start it did. As both an autism mom and a devoted school teacher, she has made it her mission to bring awareness, understanding, and support to those who need it most. Though she is no longer with us, her legacy will continue to inspire us all.

On behalf of the board members of Autism Belize and all the parents from the Autism Support Group, we extend our heartfelt condolences on Leonoria’s passing. We are deeply saddened by this loss, and we pray that God grants all those who have loved her strength and comfort during this difficult time. May she rest in eternal peace.
