Today was Mateo’s first day back to school for online learning. Horizon Academy decided to go online this year to keep our children safe and not postpone the learning process. They created a platform for online streaming of live classes. I can’t honestly tell you how it’s working as it’s the first day, but I’m glad to have this option. Even better, since we know the live streaming of classes won’t work for Mateo, they created a Special Education Corner on the website and will be tailoring how they ‘teach’ Mateo to suit his specific needs. They are working with all the special needs families to modify and adjust as they can to best help families and our kiddos.

This week is about orientation and getting everything set-up and working. Since I know that Mateo has issues with transitioning, we did not wait to start, though. We took him down to his ‘classroom’ this morning to start introducing some work and school time. We figure we would start gradually and work up to our usual schedule. I had no idea how this would go, but let me tell you, I was SHOCKED!

My boy was so excited to do work. He didn’t even fuss to do Math! Then after some time with table work, we opened a brand new floor puzzle to try. Mateo has never done a puzzle this big- and definitely not without help and some fussing. But today? Well, today was different. He sat and did the entire puzzle on his own. He didn’t get frustrated. He didn’t try to run away. He didn’t ask for help. He focused and he did it. I am flabbergasted. His shadow is mystified. Ms Elia, the Head of the Special Education Department, is speechless. We are all so proud!

Now, I think I’m gonna have to go back to Amazon and search for more floor puzzles like this. This buy was definitely worth it!

Cheers to a productive new school year….
