Life Changing

“I, Elcedia Awe, have never encountered such an impactful work shop, it’s life changing. Holistically for the first time, I have been blown away in awe. This course has made my career and my life easier and less stressful. It has given me answers to the unanswered for many years. I feel equipped with the wisdom, tools, understanding and matching the correct terminologies of situations that I face daily, especially in the classroom. I have gained extreme confidence to help my entire community and outside of it. I am so encouraged to keep educating myself in this area. I can now be that teacher who empathize, defend, protect and fight to see our country equip our Belizean people to satisfy their needs. I will stand and fight with programs like Autism Belize to make a difference. It is worth it.

Grateful

“At first, I didn’t know how to deal with my autistic student, and it was honestly a challenge. But this course taught me so much about children with disabilities, and I went back to my classroom and applied the different methods I’ve learned. Now, nobody is sweeter than my autistic student. I’ve come to realize that children with disabilities require a lot of patience and work, but what they truly need is someone or a group of people who will never give up on them. Disability doesn’t come with a manual; it comes with a mom, dad, family, friends, teachers, and a community willing to stand by them every step of the way. I’m so grateful for the lessons I’ve learned and the chance to make a difference in their lives.”

“Pinches are a love language. You know that line about autism being a puzzle? Well,
that puzzle gets even more complicated when you’ve got a little person who can’t use his words to tell you how he feels. He’s got to find other ways to communicate – and, for Teo, one way is the pinch.

There’s the “hey, there you are! I haven’t seen you since yesterday” squeeze on
the arm that you get when you say good morning. And then, there’s the “hey, keep
driving! I don’t want you to turn here – who told you I’m ready to go home” pinch that you get when you dare to turn the wrong way. And the happy squeeze, sometimes a full body squeeze, that you get when he’s happy – often when you’re swimming in the open water, and he realizes that he’s got company. That one especially is often accompanied with a big smile – and it may be followed by a hug that pushes you right under the water and leads to a game of swim tag.

Happy… mad… let’s play… sometimes words are overrated. We’ve learned
sometimes you just need a good pinch to get your message across.”
