This weekend, I was sitting at the computer and Mateo came to me and said, “shau” (his word for shower). I looked at him and said, “It’s a little late to be asking permission to go take a shower.” His hair and back were wet and he was carrying his towel. It was pretty obvious that’s exactly what he had just done. But he looked at me and repeated, “shau“. This time he grabbed my hand too.
I sighed. I knew it was getting late and he was ready to start our bedtime routine, so I closed my laptop and got up to follow him. He led me straight to the bathroom. I looked at him and asked, “You want to take another shower before bed, Teo?” He smiled directly at me and clearly said, “Mama shau”.
Now, I’m shocked. He says mama from time to time. He says shau several times a day. But to put two words together? Without prompting? THIS is HUGE for us. That’s a sentence! My boy said a sentence. Okay, so that sentence is two words, but hey, it’s a sentence.
I was too excited to think about if he was telling me I stink or that this 12 year old was once again ordering me around like he was the king and I’m merely his servant. Who cares? My son said a sentence.
Of course, I stripped right then and there and went to take my shower. Do you blame me? Proud mama right here!
